The Sendai Foundation for Applied Information Sciences is an academic organization for established by Prof. J. Ohizumi (1991), who was responsible for the R&D, and realization of the SENAC-1 computer at Tohoku University in 1958. The laboratory is engaged in:
- Basic and applied research and development of Photonic Crystals under Shojiro Kawakami Professor Emeritus of Tohoku University
- Collaborative research with researchers from many institutions, including active technology exchange with Photonic Lattice, Inc.
- Support of aspiring researchers by the "Masters Researcher" system
The "Masters Researcher" system
A researcher may be engaged in R&D at the Kawakami Laboratory for a period of three years to acquire a Doctorate of Engineering at Tohoku University under the auspices of the recently instituted "Masters Researcher System". Alternative funding may be available from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Special Researcher System.
